Years 1 (1874) & 2 (1875); 1874 with 35 of 36 brilliant chromolithographic plates of jewelry designs of the period; 1875 with 24 similar plates (complete). Each housed in folder with original front label and number of year added later. Plates are all fine. Folio.     Each: $1,500.00
Le Bijou was published to offer jewelry designers with ideas. It ran from 1874 to either 1890 or 1914, according to two different sources. However, we do know of volumes up until at least 1909. All of the plates were specifically commissioned for the magazine and adapted by commercial jewelers. It is known that for a period of about one year around 1883 Lalique sold two watercolors a month to Le Bijou (see Henri Vever, French Jewelry in the 19th Century, Vol. III, the Third Republic, trans. Brenda Forman). Because of the beauty of each of these plates, complete volumes are difficult to find; very occasionally individual plates only are seen. Although the first volume is missing plate two, this volume had more to begin with than any other volume published.
